It's Not About the DNA

Hello everyone!

My name is Lyndee, and I am so happy you are taking the time to read a little bit of my story. At the top of this page, you will see a picture of my mom and I. As you may notice, we look nothing alike... haha! My parents adopted me as a brand new baby, and I have been blessed ever since. However, before I get ahead of myself, let me explain a little bit about my birth.

My birthmother was sixteen years old when she got pregnant with me, and my birthfather desperately wanted her to get an abortion. Fortunately, my birthmother refused and decided that the best option would be to give me up for adoption. Once in contact with my parents, everything fell into place and my parents eagerly waited for me to be born. Understandably, just moments after I was born my birthmother held me and decided that she wanted to keep me after all. Yet because she was so young, her father forced her to give me up and that is how I ended up with my parents today. I share this part of my story because I believe that it is normal for birthparents to hesitate in such moments; I know I would! I don't know that any of us, until we have done it ourselves, can ever understand how much sacrifice it takes on the part of the birthmother to give a child up for adoption. So, to any birthmothers who may be reading this, or any moms who might be thinking about giving their baby up, just know how loved you are, and how grateful your child will be to you someday, whatever your choice, for making the decision that was in their best interest.

After I was born I was taken home to my older brother who too was adopted! I wont get into all of the details of my life, but to be completely honest my life wasn't exactly easy. However, I wouldn't change any part of it. The woman standing next to me on the day of my wedding is my mom, whether we have the same DNA or not. As an adopted child if there is one thing that I have learned it is that biology does not create a family, love does! I cannot wait for my husband and I to adopt some of our own children some day and provide for them an opportunity to grow up in a family who loves them.

I am now twenty-one, almost twenty-two, years old. I have two semesters left to graduate college with my bachelors degree, and have plans to move forward with my masters shortly after. I was fortunate enough to grow up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which led me to serve a mission for 18 months in Uruguay and Brazil, learning both Spanish and Portuguese. Upon returning home, I received a teaching position at the Missionary Training Center, where I have been blessed to work with and train missionaries who have gone, or will soon be heading out to all parts of the world to teach others about the Savior. I have felt Gods hand in every moment of my life, and am happy to say that I (along with my husband) will soon begin a new job as a student seminary teacher, teaching high-school students about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Adoption changed my life forever, and for that I am forever grateful.
